- OS X El capitan.app Download. I need to make a bootable USB drive installer for a 2009 MBP. I just put in a new SSD and want to do a fresh OSX install. I believe that El Capitan is the last supported software for this hardware.
- Jan 18, 2018 Click 'Download'. Click continue and it will download the El Capitan installer. When the installer is downloaded it will automatically launch. As it launches Quit the installer at the first question. That will leave you with a 'Install OS X El Capitan' installer app (about 6 GB) in the Applications folder.
Ok so you have downloaded InstallMacOSX.dmg, and you have opened that to Install MacOSX.pkg.

Double-click on that and an installation window will open, follow the prompts. This does not install
It installs an app named Install Version Name. Open that app from your Applications folder to begin installing the operating system. MacOS Sierra 10.12 can upgrade El Capitan, Yosemite, Mavericks, Mountain Lion, or Lion; OS X El Capitan 10.11 can upgrade Yosemite, Mavericks, Mountain Lion, Lion, or Snow Leopard.
El Capitan but converts the InstallMacOSX.pkg to the Install OS X El Capitan.app which will appear
in your Application folder, it is this you use to create the bootable USB installer.
Os X El Capitan Download Apple
You can only do this on Macs that can install El Capitan, any Macs that came new with macOS Sierra
or a later OS preinstalled will not be allowed to convert the .pkg to the Install OS X El Capitan.app.
This is pretty dumb of Apple, as many Mac owners might need to use newer Macs to create bootable
installers for older Macs that have experienced difficulties.
